Destroying the Chevrolet Volt with Purpose

Members of the press and local fire station gathered in Chicago to learn a few things about taking the Volt apart. First responders, need to learn valuable information that will help them save lives during emergencies. High strength steel and complex electrical systems make disassembling the Volt more difficult than older vehicles. Though the Volt packs a rather large electric battery and there is the chance of electrocution, knowing the vehicle makes this risk is relatively low. Its pretty amazing what these hydraulic cutters can do to these vehicles!

Cruze High MPG is Simple!

This is for those who are asking the question, "how does the Cruze get such good gas mileage?" General Motors has an answer and they think its pretty simple. By using a variable displacement oil pump the engine needs to supply less torque to drive the oil pump. The result, less power is needed and less gas is consumed. The oil pump will drop its displacement or output once the car is warm or running at high speeds and increase the output when needed. It really is the little things that make a big difference!

Chevrolet Volt 0-60 and MPG

More information has recently surfaced about the Volt. We now know that the Volt can accelerate from 0-60 mph in 8.53 seconds. That's nothing spectacular, but it does mean the Volt isn't gutless. On a different and disappointing note, the Volt is getting a 27 mpg while the range extender is running. That is less than most people originally had hoped, but if you stay within range of the battery it shouldn't be an issue. Looks like the Volt won't be taken on many road trips or seen at the track in the near future.

The Strength of Subaru

During the 2010 Canadian Rally Championship, driver Pat Richard and co-driver Alan Ockwell, rolled their Subaru Impreza into the trees. Immediately Pat is out of the vehicle getting spectators to help roll the car out of the bushes. Even better, the Subaru was still drivable and the rally team went on to finish first place. That is how you rally!

Safe Kids: Back to School Safety

Before kids start heading back to school, SafeKids wanted to give both children and adults some tips for staying safe this school year.

For Kids:

  • Children should cross the street with an adult until the age of ten.
  • Cross the street at corners and be sure to use traffic signals and crosswalks.
  • Never run into the street or cross between parked cars.
  • Always walk in front of the bus where the driver can see you.

For Adults:

  • Be alert and slow down when entering residential areas and school zones.
  • Watch for children on or near the road, especially before school in the morning and after school in the afternoon.
  • Do not drive distracted!
Check out the full article and stay safe this school year!

2011 Subaru Impreza WRX STI Sedan Back Again!

The redesigned Subaru WRX STI will be offered in a body style that hasn't been seen since 2008, a 4-door sedan. Other improvements still hold for the sedan model, such as the new wide body, the 305 hp turbocharged 2.5-liter flat-4, a 6-speed manual transmission and it will also feature the return of the wing. For added space and convenience the rear seats do fold down, just in case you miss the functionality of the 5-door hatchback model. Which model suits your better, the 4-door or 5-door, and why?

Subaru is Here to Save You From Office Monotony!

"Subaru XV Rescue are dedicated to saving you from the mundane. Equipped with the new Subaru Impreza XV, their mission is to help those who need to escape the ho-hum monotony of everyday life." Thats the quote from the Subaru XV Rescue website. Subaru Australia will be taking four lucky individuals from their daily jobs and give them a chance to step out of the ordinary. Winners will have the chance to surf with Ross Clarke-Jones, rally with Cody Crocker, snowboard with Damon Hayle, or cook with Sean Connolly. Unfortunately, the contest is only open to Australian residents, but given the opportunity I would fly to Australia to participate in any of these events. Check out the about page for more information and try to enter, all they can do is turn you down!

More on the Chevrolet Cruze Gas Mileage

In earlier posts about the Chevrolet Cruze I pointed out the 40 mpg engineers have managed to get out of the vehicle. To do this it uses a number of technologies and when combined they make a huge difference. One of the newest innovations is the air shutter system that optimizes the aero dynamics of the car. The air shutter is attached to two electric motors which are controlled by sensors. The sensors measure wind and temperature conditions and will open or close the shutter to maximize gas mileage. At low speeds the shutter is open to increase air flow for cooling the engine and at high speeds the shutter closes to reduce wind drag.

Overall, the shutter adds about half a miler per gallon to the averaged city and highway gas mileage. It seems like a small improvement, but over the lifetime of the vehicle and when combined with other mileage increasing technologies it makes a huge difference. As a result of these technologies the Cruze is able to maintain the same gas mileage as the Fiesta sub-compact and beat out the Honda Fit and Toyota Yaris, which all are smaller vehicles.

Some other features that contribute to the overall mileage of the Chevrolet Cruze are the 1.4-liter Ecotec turbocharged engine, lowered right height, and ultra-low resistance tires.

New Subaru Concept: An FT-86 Coupe Variant

The new Subaru concept, a variant of the Toyota FT-86 coupe, has been reported by AutoCar. According to AutoCar, Subaru's version will be more powerful and aggressive than Toyota's FT-86. The unnamed Subaru sports car will run an updated 2.0-liter boxer engine that will feature 260 hp, ousting the FT-86's 200. A six speed transmission will send power to the rear wheels and yes, that is only the rear wheels. According to reports, Subaru has decided the FT-86 will not include all-wheel drive, going away from the standards included in the rest of their line. As far as cost, Subaru will be pricing it in the range of $40,000-$48,000 and hopefully an options list will be available soon. Is this a car you would buy?

The 2012 Droptop Chevrolet Camaro

Early in 2011 the new Chevrolet Camaro Convertible will be hitting the assembly line, just in time to see showrooms when warm weather starts in March. The Convertible Camaro was first shown as a concept at the 2007 Detroit Auto Show and since then General Motors has seen hard times. Development of the drop top Camaro continued through and those who have been waiting for this model will be hitting the road next year. As of now there isn't any news on models or packages that will be available, but we are expecting some info soon.

Cell Phones for Soldiers: How it Works

Cell Phones for Soldiers was founded by two teenagers, Robbie and Brittany Berquist of Norwell Massachusetts. They started the non-profit with $21 and grew in 2008 to 3,000 collection sites around the United States and raised more than 12-million minutes for soldiers.  Now the program has over 40,000 registered drop sites and Roy Robinson is proud to be among them.

When cell phones are received at drop-off points they are shipped directly to Cell Phones for Soldiers. From there ReCellular receives the cell phones and pays Cell Phones for Soldiers for the phones. Each cell phone raises enough money for an hour of talk time, which is sent overseas as a calling car for soldiers to use. To register a Cell Phones for Soldiers drop-off point visit their website and fill out the getting started form.

Before dropping your phone off in our showroom you want to ensure it doesn't contain any personal information. For instructions on erasing data from your phone visit the ReCellular website for their free cell phone data eraser. Just enter the model of phone you own and the tool will give you directions for erasing the data. If you are looking for a drop-off point you can search by area code or come into our dealership and we will drop it in the box for you. If you don't have a cell phone and want to contribute to a great cause, Cell Phones for Soldiers also accepts donations.

If you know a soldier who needs Cell Phones for Soldiers support, enter their information in the Help Us Find a Soldier form and they will do their best to locate the soldier and help him/her call home. Also, prepaid cell phones can be requested for active military personnel or veterans. Cell Phones for Soldiers is a great organization that contributes to a great cause. I have a few cell phones at home that I have already contributed and I encourage everyone else to contribute as well. After all, I can only talk on one phone at a time.

Classic Designs Announces the FireBreather

Classic Design Concepts has announced the release the FireBreather. The FireBreather features a 6.2-liter V8 engine carrying 599 horsepower, an engine that beats-out the Z28. The concept has been styled with classic Firebird lines and combines them with the new Chevrolet Camaro style. Classic Design Concepts is asking $60,000 for a chance to own this beauty, a small price to pay if you want the Firebird look and feel.

Roy Robinson to Collect Cell Phones for Soldiers

Throughout the dealership we will be collecting gently-used cell phones that will be donated to soldiers over seas through the Cell Phones for Soldiers charity. Cell Phones for Soldiers, backed by GM and started by two teenage kids, gives soldiers calling cards and cell phones so they can call home. The new program will compliment our other programs that support local military members, which are our Military Family Friendly Employment InitiativeMilitary Discount Program, and our Military Appreciation Program. This is another way for Roy Robinson and General Motors to show our appreciation to our troops for their service to our country. So please, next time you come by the dealership ask an employee where to donate your phoneand we can show you where to donate your gently-used cell phones, which will help our troops reach their family's.

Subaru's Newest Driver

Embargo Lifted on the 2011 Chevrolet Cruze

Autoblog touts the Chevrolet Cruze as the first small car GM has taken seriously. The Cruze looks well designed on the outside and the interior also stands out. Though classified as an economy car the Cruze comes well equipped and has options that compete with larger sedans. Gas mileage is also a plus, the 1.4 liter 4 cylinder direct injected engine is pushing for 40 mpg. If you are in the market for a new commuter car with the options for upgrade, the Chevrolet Cruze looks like an appealing option.
